The 3rd edition of the new music convention platform designed for composers and professionals from the European contemporary music scene is opened in the Capital of Poland in the frame of the 53rd Warsaw Autumn Festival and the celebrations of the 200th anniversary of Frederic Chopin.

ARTMUSFAIR is devoted to strengthening the position of European contemporary classical music, its creators and makers, and aims to encourage music stakeholders to integrate more contemporary music repertoire into the framework of classical music programming in Europe.

ARTMUSFAIR 2010 contains & features …

• conferences
• trade show stands
• live music stages
• project stages
• concert series
• music clubs
• open rehearsals
• music installations
• composers’ panels
• publishers’ panels
• expertise & knowledge
• networking & discussion
• presentations
• and much more

Meet the Challenges of 21st Century Music – under this challenging title, ARTMUSFAIR 2010 is open to representatives from the entire contemporary classical music scene and aims to attract some 500 composers, music publishers, record labels, musicians, promoters, managers and agents from across the whole of Europe.

Key objectives will be the building of new and closer partnerships, the exchange of new music ideas, and the sharing of the latest best-practice examples of innovation in the contemporary music world.

The previous two editions have been held very successfully in the the City of Glasgow in 2009, following on from the pilot event that took place in Helsinki in October 2008 as part of the Nordic Music Days Festival.

With coming to Warsaw, ARTMUSFAIR comes back to the origin where the concept of this event was developed in the course of the first General Assembly of the European Composers Forum in 2007. We are very proud to return to Warsaw and hold this major four day event that is to coincide with celebrations of the 200th anniversary of Polish composer Frederic Chopin and the renown festival for contemporary music – the Warsaw Autumn.

ARTMUSFAIR 2010 is being presented by the European Composers’ Forum (ECF) in partnership with the Polish Composers Union (ZKP) and the Polish Music Information Centre (POLMIC). The main activities around ARTMUSFAIR 2010 are hosted at the Fryderyk Chopin Music University. It goes along and in partnership with a music concert series of the RE:NEW MUSIC project as well as with an international conference of “Electronics meets 21st Century Music”. The ECF - initiator of ARTMUSFAIR – is representative of 30 composer organisations in 28 European countries.

Composers and songwriters generate significant cultural and economic wealth, so understanding their lifelong educational and training needs is crucial. For this reason a major survey of composers has been launched by the Royal College of Music’s Centre for Music and Multimedia. The survey seeks to investigate the appropriateness and effectiveness of training and education opportunities for music composers, both in prospect and retrospect. It will capture the experiences of a large number and wide range of composers and songwriters within Europe and beyond, in order to lobby for better opportunities and resources to study the art and craft of composing, including lifelong learning.

If you are a composer or songwriter, please complete the survey at:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/composing

The survey has been developed by Professor David Burnand, Head of the CMM at the Royal College of Music, London; with support and advice from colleagues in the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors, the Contemporary Music Centre Ireland, the National University of Ireland at Maynooth, Leiden University Academy of Creative and Performing Arts, and the University of Hertfordshire.

On 26 & 27 March 2010, the European Composers Forum took part in the ARS NOVA platform meeting co-hosted by the European Festivals Association (EFA) and the European Conference of Promoters of New Musis (ECPNM). ARS NOVA is a platform that brings together festival directors, composers and ensembles active in the field of contemporary music to discuss and initiate co-operation and co-productions in future new music projects.

This year, more than 3o participants came together at the European House for Culture, at the Flagey in Brussels, to exchange ideas, experiences and thoughts. In connection with the ARS NOVA platform meeting, the parallel Ars Musica Festival presented dynamic, interesting concerts.

A follow-up on the outcomes is to be published soon: the 2010 ARS NOVA meeting proved to be an inspiring platform in the spirit of “opening doors” to new artistic forms, new performers, new audiences, unusual venues, unknown cultures, new points of view, new approaches to arts and the world!

ECF presented their latest project, ECCO - The European Contemporary Composers Orchestra, in Brussels on ARS NOVA to the festivals and potential partners.

The Utrecht Wind Ensemble (”Utrechts Blazers Ensemble”) issues a Call for Scores. The UBE focuses on playing modern classical music and therefore finds itself in a unique place among Dutch student ensembles. Even though this niche is not always appreciated by the large public, the members are not afraid to choose for challenging and original programmes. The UBE considers it important that new music has a place in Dutch (and student) musical culture. With this Call for Scores we would like to gain access to a new musical reservoir and play works of the next generation of composers.

Composers are invited to submit works for wind ensemble (with or without piano). Selected pieces will be performed by the UBE during two concerts in January 2011.
Submission deadline: 1st of June, 2010.
